Birds may seem harmless, but when they roost or nest on your property in large numbers they create significant problems for both residential and commercial properties across Melbourne. The three most problematic species in Melbourne are the feral pigeon (Columba livia), which roosts in large flocks on rooftops, window ledges, and commercial signage; the Common Myna (Acridotheres tristis), an invasive species that nests aggressively in roof voids, displacing other wildlife; and the Common Starling, which also nests in roof cavities and commercial signage in large numbers. A mature pigeon colony can deposit hundreds of kilograms of droppings per year. Droppings also carry pathogens including Histoplasma, Cryptococcus, Salmonella, and Ornithosis (a respiratory illness transmissible to humans). Nesting materials block gutters and downpipes, causing water damage and increasing fire risk near chimneys and flues. In commercial settings, bird activity around food storage or preparation areas creates serious food safety compliance issues. Noise from large roosts disturbs residents and guests. All native Australian birds are protected under state and federal legislation and must not be harmed. • Install bird spikes or wire deterrents on ledges, beams, and flat surfaces where birds are perching
• Seal gaps in eaves, ridge caps, and wall vents to prevent Mynas and Starlings from nesting in roof voids
• Clean up bird droppings promptly and regularly - wear a mask and gloves as dried droppings can carry airborne pathogens
• Install mesh guards over gutters to prevent nesting material from blocking them
• Remove or cover water sources such as birdbaths, open water tanks, and flat rooftop areas where water pools
• Trim trees and shrubs away from the building to reduce perching and roosting opportunities near the structure
